Join us on a unique visit of this iconic, historic, and volcanic nation, where you’ll see and learn about TWP’s long-time partnership with local NGO Proleña while visiting project sites across the country.
On the trip, you will see how clean cookstoves are designed, manufactured, and used, meander through a shade grown coffee farm, visit the colonial cities of León and Granada, and a nearby coastal mangrove reserve, and be some of the first to see our evolving Tierra Verde Climate Education Center in La Paz Centro, opening this yea.
The tour is one week long, and promises to be educational, fun and action-packed.
Cost: $1,750 (Cost includes meals, lodging, in-country transportation, park fees, and guiding. Does not include cost of airfare to Managua, Nicaragua.)

Arrive to the Managua International Airport in Nicaragua’s famous capital, and be enthusiastically greeted by your Trip Leaders, Gemara Gifford, International Director, Daniela Bueso, Tours Specialist Trees, Water & People, and Valentina de Rooy, Nicaraguan-local and Regional Manager. Take private transportation to have a meet and greet with our local partner PROLEÑA, meet their staff and talk about their ongoing projects. Then, we will have a welcoming group dinner with the PROLEÑA staff and enjoy some traditional Nicaraguan meals!
Rise and shine to the beautiful Nicaraguan weather in February. Enjoy the fruit-of-the-season and delicious coffee at breakfast while your trip leader walks you through the activities for the week. Our first stop will be in La Paz Centro at the Tierra Verde Climate Change Education Center, a collaboration between Trees, Water & People and PROLEÑA. Be some of the first to learn about the Center’s activities, and its importance in helping Nicaraguans adapt to and mitigate climate change. Enjoy lunch at the famous, Comedor La Paz Centro, and spend the night in Managua or Leon.
Start off the day with a delicious traditional breakfast, and depart to the Northern region of the country in the town of Jinotega. Once there, we will visit the different projects in rural communities in Cuculmeca. Learn about the on the ground work being done by our partner PROLEÑA, where they are designing, manufacturing, and delivering clean cookstove technology across the country. After lunch, we will visit a few urban families who were beneficiaries to these stoves to see what impact they have had in their lives. We will then travel to the Jaguar Reserve and enjoy a nice local dinner.
Take the morning off to explore a beautiful Jaguar Reserve on the Eastern side of Jinotega. This will be a day full of eco adventures, visiting waterfalls and a butterfly sanctuary. Enjoy a relaxing lunch and get ready to the community of Matagalpa where we will spend the evening.
Early departure to the beautiful colonial town of Granada! we will visit local cathedrals, coffee shops and markets while enjoying a delicious lunch. Then, we will make our way to the gorgeous Bird-Friendly Certified Coffee Farm, Gaia Estate, where we will learn about the sustainable agriculture on-site including vanilla agroforestry, turmeric farming, and of course, shade-grown coffee. Enjoy a premier coffee tasting with the Farm Owner, Jefferson Shriver, enjoy a fresh farm lunch, and gear up for a medium-paced hike around the farm. We’ll close out the day by appreciating the beautiful sunset views from the Gaia Estate Guest House, and head to Granada for the evening.
Our adventure continues with an early departure to tour the beautiful Mangroves of Isla Juan Venado, and the Las Peñitas Coastal Community. Enjoy being on a 2-hour guided boat tour through the gorgeous, but endangered mangrove habitat and see dozens of wild bird species, and interesting mangrove critters. Lunch on shore, and head back to León to relax for the afternoon. We’ll enjoy dinner at your Trip Leader’s favorite spot and have a group reflection about the week’s activities so far.
Have you ever seen a volcano, swam in a lake, and gone zip-lining all in one day? We’ll have various options for you to enjoy the last day of your tour, as Granada could never disappoint! We will close out the day out with a final group “despedida” dinner with Trees, Water & People and Proleña staff, and celebrate our accomplishments during the week.
Departure day! Enjoy a group reflection over breakfast, exchange memories and favorite photos, and get ready for an early departure to the Managua International Airport. Relish with your new friends on this one-of-a-kind experience as you make your way home. Until next time!
